We have a Polytunnel!
Close by the toilet on the Ally Pally Allotments site, we now have a polytunnel, looking splendid and, with the onset of spring, warming up nicely. The growing space in it will be used for the allotment community’s purposes, supporting the efforts of those allotmenteers who contribute produce and seedlings for the plant sale and for the Annual Horticultural Show. Encouraged by the success of the plant sales already held, your committee has invested in what will be a very significant resource for generating more funds to improve the site still further.
Built by a handful of volunteers, and in the spirit of the BAFTA’s, best director: Angela Silva Jones; best male lead: Colin Roberts; best supporting male actor: John Wilkinson; Best Boy: Peter Campbell; best cinematographer: Bob Hare; best Tunnel Wrangler: Mike Cort, with supporting actors including Reza, Roland and Anne. It should be a great asset for years to come.
Colin very generously allowed us to use part of his plot for the tunnel and we’ll be having a work party in the next week or so to tidy up the beds we’ve disturbed, so join in if you can. We’re also trying to make the polythene proof against cat and bird damage. If you come to look and see how the tunnel is developing (please do come!) remember that the polythene, though quite tough, is easily damaged.
If you have any ideas about how we can use the tunnel, or about other site improvements you’d like to see – get in touch.
